Many of you are probably doing Dry January – and some of you may be taking it a step further and doing a full-blown detox. Chances are, silly season left you exposed to nasty free radicals, thanks to the alcohol you drank, the cigarettes you smoked, or the junk food you ate to assuage that hangover. Free radicals are bad because they can damage your cells, and they can potentially affect your DNA.

 

Antioxidants, on the other hand, are said to counter this, protecting your cells from the effects of free radicals. Including the likes of selenium and carotenoids such as vitamin A, C, and E, they are said to help you stay young, fight off infections, and much more. You’ll find them in nuts, seeds, legumes, vegetables and fruit, as well as, to some extent, in meat, fish and poultry.

 

Like so many other vitamins and minerals, the best way to get your antioxidants will always be through food. But if you think you’re not getting access to what you need through what you eat, try boosting your antioxidant intake with supplements. To help you on your path to a fresher you, we’ve cherry-picked three antioxidants that are said to be the super-highway to rejuvenation. 

  • 1. ASTAXANTHIN

    Astaxanthin

    This carotenoid pigment is said to improve blood flow (particularly in smokers and those who are overweight) and endurance by preventing damage to muscles and the skeleton, to promote healthy skin, help with joint pain, and it may even have cancer-fighting properties, too. In nature, it’s found in Pacific salmon, trout, shrimp and yeast, among others. Here are two supplements you can use to up your astaxanthin intake.

  • 2. RESVERATROL

    Resveratrol

    Resveratrol is known as another winner in this field, heralded for its anti-aging properties. A polyphenol found in the likes of grapes, red wine and chocolate, it’s promoted for its potential ability to aid weight loss, fight skin damage, prevent and treat cancer, and for its possible power to reduce blood pressure.

     

    It does seem to have oestrogen-like properties, however, so it’s not for everyone.

    Turmeric

    This golden-yellow spice is a mainstay in Indian curries and in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, and it’s delicious paired with ginger and coconut milk for a turmeric chai latte. It contains curcumin, which is particularly famous for its anti-inflammatory properties, and it is used to combat everything from joint pain and bronchitis to cancer. Studies have demonstrated the power of curcumin at scavenging free radicals – and it’s also possible that curcuminoids can prevent the development of free radicals in the first place.
