PRINT, PATTERN & COLOUR

Who wants their home to look like a showroom? There’s nothing lived in about that look – it feels cold and soulless. This season’s print and pattern trend offers a quick fix: by layering different motifs, you can instantly give your home soul and depth. Your space will look bold, bright and beautiful in a flash, as well as perfectly put together.

This look has its challenges, of course. If done wrong, it can look messy and intense. The trick, then, lies in picking patterns that feel compatible. One option is to choose the same or similar patterns in different sizes: for example, a cushion with small hexagons printed on it, and a throw with larger hexagons printed on it.

It’s also about choosing a colour palette and sticking to it. You could, for example, choose wallpaper, cushions, rugs and throws in complementary shades of orange, red and pink. Or you could go for bold geometrics in black and white, with a dash of pink thrown in.

When choosing cushions, pick items in different sizes; if they’re all the same size, they will look too matchy-matchy. And go for odd numbers: three or five cushions will look great together, whereas two or four just looks contrived.

This look is sure to bring vibrancy to any space. It’s playful and joyous… and, ultimately, you should have fun putting it together. We certainly had fun coming up with our takes on the print, pattern and colour trend. Here they are below: three different ways to style your space.

  • 1. LOOK 1: GRAPHIC & GORGEOUS

    Look 1: Graphic & Gorgeous

Black and white go together perfectly, and they’re so classic that you can make your statement by mixing and matching very bold prints. They work with almost any colour: fuchsia, Chanel red, yellow, peony pink… the choice is yours.

For our take on this look, we’ve opted for this season’s on-trend colour, teal, and a smoky blue. You could try pairing geometrics together (like Cole & Son’s hexagonal wallpaper and the Eichholtz Thistle rug), or go really bold and mix geometrics with House of Hackney’s Troop wallpaper.

  • 2. LOOK 2: URBAN JUNGLE

    Look 2: Urban Jungle

This look isn’t for the faint-hearted, but if done right, it will brighten up your life while remaining stylish. The trick lies in working with a predominantly white base, and throwing lots of bright, beautiful colour on top of it. Start with a strong, bold base – like Eichholtz’s geometric rug in black and white – then work in fun, whimsical prints like the bird and palm motifs we’ve suggested here.

Keep your colour palette consistent, too: we’ve chosen similarly strong shades, but this would also work with white topped with prints in pretty pastels.

  • 3. LOOK 3: FOLK SUNSET

    Look 3: Folk Sunset

This look sees folk, craft and tribal prints come together, creating a striking balance between organic and geometric forms. What brings these elements into harmony is their shared colour palette. We’ve gone for sunset shades of pink, red, coral and orange – they’ll look fab on a white base. We see this working well with a white sofa, white walls, a hessian or jute rug underfoot, atop which sits one of those Mandarin coffee tables in black or pale wood.
